Dr. Lionel Allen, Assistant Professor, Leadership Coach, University of Illinois - Chicago.
Dr. Allen is an award-winning school leader with almost twenty years of experience in education as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, Turnaround Principal, and Chief Academic Officer. In 2005, Dr. Allen was selected to become the nation’s first turnaround principal. In just four short years, Sherman went from the second worst performing school in the state of Illinois to a national model of school reform and a catalyst for future turnaround efforts across the country. Most recently, Dr. Allen led a highly successful network of charter high schools in rewriting the educational narrative for young African American males in Chicago. Currently, he serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Leadership Coach at the Center for Urban Education Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Dr. Jones - "What are the leadership shifts required to influence systemic school change? Who are the essential stakeholders in the change process?"
In this session, a former CPS principal takes you on a leadership journey to understanding the key elements of school improvement. The session will center on the comprehensive work that occurred at one public neighborhood high school.
Dr. Allen - "The Time for Inspiration is Over"
Inspiration breeds comfort and comfort preserves status quo. In this call to action, Lionel Allen, Jr. questions the utility of “inspiration” in a world in dire need of positive and radical change.
Teacher Power Professional Development Series
September's Edworking event represents the group of educators (including you!) who choose to rewrite the narrative that education is full of limits. Let's reimagine what Education can and should look like - our impact, reach, talent, and students' potential are limitless. In this session you will hear from 4 Chicago teachers whose message will be to focus on opportunities instead of barriers, and to push limits rather than place limits. They’ll each deliver an engaging ten minute “Power PD” with the purpose of offering inspiration, instilling urgency, and providing resources that everyone can take back to their schools.
